Yesterday was wonderful. We let sister sluff school, and the Mr. took me (and the babes) shopping in SLC!

I have to admit, it was a little heavenly for me. The shopping was fun, although felt sinful after about 5 hours, but still fun for the mama! I love any day that I get to keep my family with me all day long.

It's even more fun on a weekday when you know you're avoiding all responsibility and enjoying only moments of pleasure!

This is sister's favorite thing to do when we're shopping.

I'll never forget the first time she pushed him in the stroller she said, "now I really feel like a big sister." I love seeing the two of them together.

Now, as for today....on to organizing, hanging curtains, nursing the babe, (who slept through the night for the first time on his 3 month birthday!!!) clean, finish laundry, and what to make for dinner?....

I love days like today.

And yesterday.

edit:: best part of today so far...play time with baby, then rocking and singing him to sleep. I love feeling his body relax in my arms as he drifts off to a peaceful slumber.

Today I feel happy!

(not that that's unusual)

I'm happy to be a wife and a mother.

Happy to be healthy.

Happy because there is a fresh blanket of snow on the lawn. And I hear my wind chimes.

...they always make me think of my mother.

This morning I laid on my bed with my baby. He held my finger while he slept. He held on so tight that his fingertips were white. I laid there looking at his beautiful tiny hand, and I felt so grateful to be his mother. I love my children. I love being their mother. I love that every moment is unpredictable. Well most anyway. I can count on a 9 year old that hates waking up for school, but is happy to be at school when she gets there. Silly girl.

Yesterday I asked sister to shovel the sidewalks for us.

I peeked out the window at her, and she was shoveling the neighbors driveway!

A proud moment for the mama.

I love those little moments where you see fruits of your labor as parents.

I was so touched by her compassion and thoughtfulness.

Especially since the neighbors left for their 18 month mission yesterday.

And let's not forget the trip to the aquarium Saturday.

She finally got to see real otters! And spend the day with her daddy.

And that made one happy little girl.

Every morning sis comes in our room to give brother his morning greeting.

He loves her, and she loves him.

It completely melts my heart. It melts Mr. W's too.

Some mornings we just sit in bed together and observe what we've created.

It is a beautiful thing.

I love that we have a 9 year old and a newborn. It's wonderful to watch the chemistry between the two of them.

I love to say that I have "children." It gives me butterflies in my tummy!

I feel so blessed everyday.

(of course bear bear is with them too)

This is what sister has been up to lately. She's working on the longest picture in the world!

She loves the Ed Emberly drawing books she got for Christmas.

I love how she always has to organize her crayons and markers into a rainbow when she's creating!

I made baby some pants out of a t-shirt...I always have to embellish the bum!

(I can already hear him say, "oh mom, do you have to say that?)

I can't believe my baby boy is 10 weeks old.

My heart is full.

Full of love for these two incredible children I've been blessed with. I feel like I'm settling into this new role. Mother of two, and mother of a newborn. I love it. My little boy knows I am his mother. I can speak to him from across the room and it comforts him. When he sees me he smiles. And I do too! I'm learning to stop mid-whatever to come to his rescue, and be okay letting things (cleaning) go. I'm learning that the best product of the day is not the the tangible, like sewing something from start to finish, but rather a happy and content baby and 9 year old. These days I'm doing good to get my exercise done and the house cleaned before it's time to pick up sister, and I love it! My days are full of everything I've dreamed of.

This little boy loves his sister so much.

This morning on the way to school I was watching her in the rear view mirror. She was resting her head on his seat and staring at him. She helped him grasp his toy and taught him all about how to play with it. She has been amazing. Even more so after being the only child for 9 1/2 years.

Life is sweet. Happy. Beautiful. Lovely.

I just can't seem to get enough of this summer. I'm loving every moment. The time with Mr. W and my girl, the warm sun on my skin (even if it causes me to have contractions), watching my pumpkins and raspberries grow, having grass in the back yard, feeling patriotic when I see a flag flying, and on and on...

I love it all!

L had the most amazing teacher in second grade, who still checks on her 2 years later. On Sunday morning she left a book on the front porch (Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat by Lynne Jonell) with a card that said she just knew L would love this book! It just so happens, she was RIGHT! We have read it everyday. We will read over an hour and L will request "please don't stop!" Last night I read to her while she was bathing until she was a prune, then we laid in her bed together and read until almost 10:00. I love it when we find books that I enjoy every bit as much as she does. I love the sweetness I feel between us when we are spending time together cuddled up with a good read. And I love good friends that remember you years after they have taught your daughter in school.

..especially to your kitties! L does 20 minutes of reading each morning. She finds it much more enjoyable when she rounds up the kitties and they have story time in the mud room. This girl loves her cats.

We did an "extreme makeover" in her room this week. These pictures are now framed and hanging above her bed. Each night we all end up laughing as we kneel to say prayers and look above her bed to see her two cats starring at us!

Summer is here. And it's wonderful. Each day begins with slowly waking to the sunrise, laying in bed by my sweetheart, and waiting for the sound of little feet walking across the catwalk into our room. Each day L does 2 pages of her workbook, math flash cards, and piano, then the rest of the day is all hers. She's done it everyday, usually before I mention it. Amazingly!

One morning while the three of us were laying in bed, Mr. W and I told her about the card in the spokes trick we used to do when we were kids. She and Mr. W had them on her bike before 8 am! She loves it. (despite the fact that her playmate told her it's a nuisance to the neighborhood) We l.o.v.e. our neighborhood. Everyday the kids are out riding bikes and making some new trail on the dirt hill behind our house. Some of the kids gathered up old fence posts and built a fort. I love seeing kids be kids. I decided this summer would be a summer without lessons (except piano every other week) and schedules. We will fit one session of swimming in, and the little house in the valley day camp. Other than that, I want the days to slowly pass and be exactly what they have been so far.

We did sneak in a trip to Moab and one to Lagoon. Mr. W begins rotations in 2 weeks, so that is probably the extent of vacations this summer. No worries though, we're happy getting our yard in and actually having a garden again after 3 years of moving! I already have spinach for my smoothie each morning, and mixed greens for my salad every evening. It's heaven! And I have pumpkins in their beginning stages! My favorite.

Let's just keep things exactly the way they are...

because we missed you this morning. but, we are happy with the weekend festivities and celebrations. thank you once again.

L was happy this morning. why wouldn't she be. she's worked so hard to prepare all of her 32 valentine's, (combined two of my favorites here and here) and was more excited than ever been to deliver them. of course, she's always happy when i greet her in the morning with, "would you like heart shaped pancakes for breakfast?"

remember our conversation last night about how giving undivided attention goes a long way? still working! she got dressed with no grumbling, let max out for the morning routine..you know what i mean, thanked me profusely for such a yummy breakfast, rinsed and packed all of her dishes- without being asked, and got all of her valentine's and backpack loaded up...once again without being asked! that makes for a great morning for the mommy too!

so, last night after mr. w and i finish working out, we all sit together on the floor for fhe. (this semester it's moved from monday to wednesday...yucky schedule) L hops on mr. w's back and says, "ooh dad, your back's all wet. kinda like it, it's sort of sticky." she cracks me up. it was even better watching my mr. with his face in his hands laughing helplessly. kids are great!

::no pics today. camera is in the shop getting cleaned. $75 later, let's hope the spots go away.

yesterday i went to help in L's classroom. she ran up to me with a handmade, folded and taped envelope and said "it's for you." i shoved it in my pocket and asked her to go back to her desk.. her teacher was right in the middle of giving instructions. this little girl is always, and i mean always, doodling something for me. love it. we proceeded to the science experiment, then afterwards she said, "mom, you haven't even looked at the envelope!" i pulled it out of my pocket and she had pulled her tooth out at school! i had checked that tooth a few days ago, and it was NOT that loose. if i had to guess, she was sitting at her desk for an hour or so working that tooth, and not paying the least bit of attention to what was going on around her. i love this girl! that's a talent.. to be able to tune life out and be in your own- i MUST pull this tooth out right this very minute world. yep, i bet she missed the entire reading hour...

so, here we go again. monday. even max is feeling it. the heavenly, long awaited weekend has passed. i don't mind really. 5 more days to the next.

monday for me means: cleaning from the unstructured weekend, laundry, picking up the groceries we ran out of over the weekend, and of course, the routine is back in force. there's something comforting about the hum of the dryer in the background, and seeing the floors shine again... today, a haircut gets thrown in the mix. much, much needed.

mr. w took L swimming on saturday. which gave me a little time to sneak in some sewing. i'm loving how this one turned out! pizza party with some fam afterwards, and a little playing spot-it. it's our favorite game at the moment.

what a great day. lucky for me because miss L was out of school and mr. w sluffed school!

(okay, not really sluffed... stayed home to work on his seminar, but he was here)

the weekend begins with a "family camp out" in the front room. somebody was sooooo excited.

this girl loves her dog, and in this moment she was showing it in a kind way.

sometimes he has to accept teasing as a sign of affection...and not only from the little L...

presents wrapped and ready for the big day...

even L had a few surprises in store for the mommy and the daddy!

when the big day is almost here, a snowstorm is expected in North Carolina, so santa arrives a little early so we can make an earlier flight...December 23 to be exact.

we made it to n.c. the night before the big storm. grandma has to check on her "blow ups" to make sure the snow isn't too heavy on them!

and her grape arbor... she and i went for a christmas walk around her property. it was beautiful. perfect. and even more perfect to walk with my mom.

here is "snowie chloie" l, alexis and i built christmas night. i have to admit, i felt like a little girl again building a snowman for my mom as she watched from the kitchen window. loved the moment.

the big day was in june. it only took me until september to take the photos. and until november to post them. i was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

every time i look at these my heart melts. my little girl, do you know how much i love you? do you know how proud i am of you? do you know how shocked i was that you asked me to make your dress instead of buying the ones you tried on at that little shop? i know you really do know all of these things, because i tell you everyday. you make me so happy.

it's been awhile... but here we are, and it's halloween.

it's been a great one! as i type, my little hippie and her daddy are trick-or-treating, and i'm here listening to "the great pumpkin" in the background. we had a halloween party at school yesterday, and one today with 5 of l's friends. she said it was the "best party ever," thanks to these gals. it feels great to be in our house and feel like we're home this holiday season. happy...

L lost tooth #3 this morning. she wanted it out before school to show all of her friends! the little tooth is in a medicine jar, tucked into the pocket on bobby the aphid's tummy. just in time for all of the second graders to see at the morning circle. happy day for my girl.

it's soccer season again! despite our best efforts to steer her in a different direction, she decided to play again. i don't mind the whole soccer thing really, but do you see those mountains? it's not warm. really. at least it wasn't that day.

easter was wonderful. conference was a beautiful addition. the handmade bunny was a hit, as was cousin zach. beautiful.

we braved the cold and went to the zoo yesterday. we saw the porcupine's face for the first time...it only took about 2 years! it was worth it!

and well. let's not forget that a house is still being built. amazingly fast, if i do say so myself.

this is the "honey bucket" onsite. if you know where that name came from, please educate me!?! did you know they are equipped with a telephone? can you say SANITIZER? fast.

we did venture to baby animals days today. it was crowded and windy. made me excited to get my chickens!

Valentine's Day was so fun this year. We set a $20 limit on gifts, which I have to admit was a lot of fun for me! L was home sick on Tuesday and Wednesday, so we made shirts and chocolate caramels for Mr. W. The shirts were the best. When L and I walked downstairs sporting them, Mr. W burst into laughter.. we all did! It was so unexpected and hilarious!!

I love that we love each other. Our gifts are simple and fun, but true love and laughter are the priceless gifts I treasure!

I've tried my very best to keep things as normal and calm as possible through this move. The last one, yes 1 year and 2 months ago, was tough for Missy. This one.. much better. I managed to make my way through the boxes rather quickly, even put the Christmas tree up our first night here. (it took up less space standing than it did in the box, but that sounded impressive) So, I believe we are feeling settled and so ready for a much needed break from the everyday routine.

But, before we're off to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with family, there's joy to be spread! Miss L put her hand to sewing lots of buttons onto bobby pins, while I played on photoshop. Together we brought lots of smiles to some second graders this morning. It was wonderful watching her pass out her simple little handmade treasures. I was so impressed by these little girls, each one flaunting a new barrett in her hair. They were so appreciative and it seemed to make each one feel special.

For the teachers in our life.. something warm and sweet. Hot chocolate (I admit I could have been more creative) and homemade marshmallows, that just happen to be the first marshmallows that I actually like. We added a little coconut flavoring and coated some in coconut, others in powdered sugar to top hot chocolate. Gift giving = happiness.

As if the holidays and wrapping up another semester are not busy enough, we decided to throw a move in the middle of it all. What were we thinking? We obviously sold our house, which I am so gracious for in this economy. We are back in the condo again, preparing to build another house. Back home.

It's nice to have the internet again, but I completely enjoyed not having it for 3 weeks. I am reconsidering how much I need the internet. There were a few moments of frustration.. I actually had to look up numbers in the phone book. Prehistoric huh.

L and I have been plenty busy getting gifts prepared for teachers and friends. I'll post about those soon, so cute and delicious!

The wait is over.. we finally let miss L get her ears pierced! She has been asking for a year or so, and we gave in. I knew she could take care of them herself, and she agreed to wear only non-dangley earrings. I felt okay about it until we watched a boy get both of his ears pierced before her. Something felt really wrong. What in the world was I doing paying someone to put holes in my daughter's ears? Needless to say, I went through with it and she is one happy girl! I'll admit it, I think they are really cute and girly.

Now, I know this shouldn't make her happy, but you know L. (her obsession with doctor stuff and all) She was invited to a roller skating birthday party and, well, need I say more? Instead of being at home and preparing my Thanksgiving feast, I was in the doctor's office getting her x-rays and bandaged. Before we found out it was in fact broken, she said she was hoping to get a cast. She won.

This time of year is all about tradition for me. When I made the decision to move across the country without my family, tradition took on a whole new meaning. It is vital to me for L to carry on those rituals that are so ingrained into my soul. Like the sweet potato casserole, broccoli casserole, baked mac and cheese, orange slice cake, pumpkin cake roll, pecan pie, window clings, and Christmas music. (which is completely acceptable all year round) And FAMILY, oh family. There is nothing like it. The laughs + the memories. (even if Sarah is the only one that can remember some of them) I can't tell you how wonderful it is to sit around with my family and talk about our childhood. I can't believe how much I miss that. It's strange really, not having anyone to reminisce with about your childhood.

I completely look forward to our celebrations this year. I can't wait to go home. I can't wait to see Santa at Grandma W's. I love reading "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" to L time and time again. A few years ago, I could actually recite the entire book from memory we read it so many times!

I love holidays! Today all of the children at school dress-up and have a costume parade through the halls. L looks forward to it every year. On the way to school she said, "I'm sure glad I had the swine flu last week and not today." Me too little girl, although I'm not sure I'm glad I had the swine flu...ever.

It was so fun to see the children file into the classroom one by one, checking out who was who and full of excitement. Ms. Checketts is so wonderful to let the children be wiggly and rambunctious and join right in the fun with them. (one little girl had to tell Ms. Checketts that her witch voice was scaring her and asked if she was going to use that voice all day. she agreed that is was probably a little frightening and would use her Ms. Checketts voice instead)

I will head back to school this afternoon to host the class Halloween party. What a fun day. Happy Halloween...

oh boy, tomorrow it begins.. two days of Halloween! L is so excited she can't stand herself. The costume is finally finished and ready to creep all of Ms. Checketts' second graders out of their gourd. Okay, not really. Missy wanted to be scary this year with her costume, so she chose to be Medusa. Mom wanted her to be something sweet, so she will be the kind and enchanting version of Medusa. (it'll be our little secret, as she feels she is quite frightening) I also decided that after sewing 6 Halloween costumes that she wore only once, this year I would make one that she will wear, even after the holiday has passed. (I'm so sneaky) I love Halloween. I love the thrill in the crisp air. This year we will visit cousins down south and trick-or-treat with them on Saturday.

On the menu.. soup and bread of course, to warm us before we head out into the dark and frightening cold of Halloween night. Can't wait.

Life finally resumed outside of our home on Friday, just in time for the annual Pumpkin Walk! You know it's fall when you get to freeze your buns off walking from the elementary school to see the beautiful displays constructed from gourds and pumpkins. There is joy in my heart when I'm with 22 second graders, walking outside in the crisp air and watching the leaves fall from the trees.

Yesterday we celebrated my nephew's 12th birthday. (which Mr. W and I swear is his fourth birthday this year) I am so bad at knowing what to buy teenagers...money usually does the trick though. I found the instructions for this Book of Money online and quickly put it together before the party. It felt a little more thoughtful than giving a card with money stuck inside. At least I thought so, I don't know if a 12 year old really cares how the money arrives!

So we're surviving. I think I'm over the hump, but my poor little girl was up at 1 a.m. with a fever of 104.3. I was up with her, watching every rise and fall of her chest until 4 a.m., when her temperature slowly came back down to 102. I savor the moments. I love being a mother. I love being the one to give her comfort. Mr. W has taken care of us so tenderly since Saturday, I was glad I felt good enough to be the one to give comfort last night. Seeing her lay on the couch with her bear bear and Max makes me miss my little girl. She may not fit in my arms like she used to, but there will always be a lap to help make those arms a comfortable and safe place to fall.

So here we are. I figured it was only a matter of time before I got the swine flu. (why can't they call it something cute like the unicorn flu or something like that? didn't bother me until I have to tell people that I have it) Due to my lack of a spleen it seemed I was just waiting my turn. Unfortunately, L has it too. So...we are quarantined for probably 5-7 days. Yuck. We'll make the best of it. She'll miss crazy hair day at school tomorrow. I promised her we'll have our own crazy hair day together. (all I have to do is roll out of bed and leave it be! doesn't sound too bad)
Why is it that ramen noodles sound so yummy when you are sick? Missy wanted some and it smells so good.

I pulled out some of my fabric stash looking for a project to occupy my hands and decided this is the perfect opportunity to work on L's halloween costume. My mom, bless her, helped me sew on all of the button eyes last week. Now the hat is complete...what to do for the dress? hmm.

We had a great week with miss L being out of school! The air was crisp and the fall leaves accompanied by snow capped mountains were breathtaking. We visited the aquarium, the fabric store, (of course) and went to lunch together! It was so nice to have a break from the everyday routine. Only wish it could have lasted longer.

Guess where we went this weekend? It was incredible.

L was home sick on Sunday, which means I was home too. I can't complain about the relaxing Sunday morning, preparing a delicious meal for Mr. W when he came home from church. It was nice. But then, what to do the rest of the day...I actually took a nap. Wow, I'm proud of myself.

Then I remembered how last year I wanted to make L some arm warmers, (aka fingerless mittens) but I didn't know how to knit in a round using all of those extremely intimidating needles. So, I pulled out the materials and tools I had previously purchased and set my mind to teaching myself. I had a little help from Martha Stewart...but I did it! I finished a pair yesterday, complete with stripes and a hole for the thumb. (I'll have to post that picture later) Ahh...it feels good.

Now we're off to parent teacher conference and spending the day with my girl!

movin' things around & holiday decorating

What is it about fall that makes me want to "spring clean?" I love to re-decorate and move things around. Perhaps it's because I know I'm stuck inside the entire winter...who knows. Whatever it is, it's happening. It can be a simple stack of magazines paired with a small pumpkin, move the side table to the other side of the couch, or new bubbly floral globes or festive bats hanging from the ceiling. No matter how simple, it makes me happy to look at something old in a new spot. It feels new...some how.

I tried my skills at mod podge for the first time. (never thought I'd see the day) I kind of like it. L does too. I don't know how far I'll go with the clear drying glue, but I like this project anyway.

If you know me very well, you know that this is my favorite time of year. (now through December) I feel like my spirit awakens and I feel joy in my soul!

Well, this morning I unexpectedly found myself Christmas Shopping! I always start stashing a little cash away around July or August, just in case I happen upon the perfect gift and just can't pass it up. It happened this morning... I can't say what it was or I could ruin a surprise for some special people, but it sure was fun!

Now I am savoring the scent of sugar cookies baking in my oven. We are typically healthy in our food choices, but the crisp breeze coming in the kitchen window and smell of fall made the choice irresistible. Besides, who doesn't love the memory of coming home from school and smelling the fresh baked cookie aroma lingering in the kitchen?

How great are these? We were looking around a used book store on main Saturday afternoon, and came across 12 vintage friend magazines! Initially the covers caught my fancy, (the vintage art is to die for. They are going in frames in L's room...eventually) but I was so intrigued when I began to flip through the pages. They are filled with comics, crafts, recipes, and as tradition would have it, endless wisdom. We are using them for family home evening tonight!

They are everything I live for. The gospel, family, tradition, values, vintage art, wisdom, crafts, and food. What's not to love? Yippee!

Summer can't possibly last long enough for us. I had a dream last night that school was back in session...ugg. I guess it is only 3 weeks away, and although I love school, I love having no schedule and being with my girl. Our lack of a schedule yesterday allowed for a little spontaneity. (as each day has!) We walked the river trail, visited the ducks at first dam, and met daddy at Aggie Ice Cream for lunch. I Love summer!

It has finally happened. My girl has 2, yes not one but 2, loose teeth! (she thinks 4, as you can tell by her art sketches above) She has been waiting since preschool to lose her teeth. All of her first grade peers have permanent teeth, my poor girl had to take my wisdom teeth in a jar to show her friends. I'm sure next school year she will proudly write her name on the "lost tooth" chart with all of the others. (I think she will feel more proud than any second grader in history to participate in this ritual)

The blessed aphid guy "Bobby" passed away today. He was a trooper for surviving 4 days in a rubbermaid container. Missy shed many tears and tried to looked at his little carcass under her microscope. This process resulted in losing him somewhere on the desk or in the carpet. I guess that is easier than trying to bury an aphid.

L had her first piano recital Thursday evening. I am so proud of my girl. A few weeks ago she signed herself up to perform in the primary talent show, but an hour before decided that she was too nervous. I wondered if this would be the case come Thursday evening, but she followed through on her commitment and proved to have nerves of steel.

All day she kept saying, "I wish I could play my recital now and get it over with." So, we came to the decision (or was influenced to the decision) that perhaps if she had a skirt filled with bird friends they could accompany her to the recital, and help to at least slightly, calm those nerves. It is after all, much more fun to play a recital for a flock of birds rather than a room full of people. (and sewing serves as a great way to distract an anxious little girl) We quickly pulled out the $2.99 Ikea stash and set to work. Happily, the skirt was a success by way of distraction, company, and consequently matched the gray top I made 2 weeks ago.

Boy it has been fun around here! We LOVE summertime, even when it is 61 degrees at swimming lessons. We did make it to Lagoon on Saturday. fun fun.

Each day has brought with it fun (and messy) projects. Once again...I'm thankful I kept the "Kids" magazines around. We've made cornstarch quicksand and play-doh. Yesterday we made this lunch chart, which is a huge hit. L was so excited to choose her lunch for today, I was so excited that I didn't have to search through the pantry and wait 10 minutes for her decision.

I have been giddy with excitement all day long! I L-O-V-E summer with my girl. And my man. (he's out of school too!) And the Sugar City quarterly is available here.

L watched her birth video for the first time. It was all about seeing the medical equipment and instruments. (nothing inappropriate to be seen)

I am so glad I kept all of my Martha Stewart Kids magazines. They are a treasure trove of summer activities. Today she chose to make butter. Easy and delicious!

Pour into a jar:

half pint of heavy cream

pinch of salt

1 marble

Screw lid on and pull out those muscles. Shake and shake and keep shaking for about 15 minutes. After cream separates, pour off the buttermilk and you have BUTTER! L was amazed it was so simple to make, and it is really yummy.

We've made it to summer! The "see you next years" have all been said and hugs given, so off we go. It almost feels like Christmas. I feel like I have been given this great gift I've been anticipating all month long.

Yesterday was field day. The water games were definitely the crowd favorite.

Today, lots of recess and each child was presented with a certificate of achievement. L's was for being an "outstanding student." It was kind-of sad walking out of first grade for the last time. Driving to and from school each day, reading groups every Monday morning, helping switch reading books and saying the pledge every morning, and being a room parent. All little memories I will forever cherish.

As I am always looking for any excuse to make her a new outfit, the last day of school was a seemingly appropriate occasion. A gray top with culottes was the request. I used this tutorial for the flowers on the top.

So, now we move on to summer. We're off to a good start. When we left school I asked missy if she wanted to go out to lunch, "no thanks, let's go home and rest." Oh I loved that answer. It made me feel good that given a choice, home is where she wants to be. We are going to see the movie "Up" in 3D later, and Saturday we are planning on going to Lagoon. I am looking forward to what each day will bring. I hope for reading, recreating, cooking out, creativity, projects and anything that will fill our hearts and minds with joy and sweet memories.

school endings

With summer break officially 3 days away the tune has gone from, "only 5 more days of school, hooray!" to "only 3 more days of school. I don't want 1st grade to end." It doesn't help that the last 2 weeks of school are jam packed with parties and fun. My little girl despises change. (I don't know where she gets that from.) She worries about not seeing her friends, if her next teacher will like her, and if she is smart enough for the second grade. Oh man, if only there was a way that she could see her life the way I see it. She has NO need to worry. It leads me to wonder how much stress we place on ourselves unnecessarily. If only we could see the B I G picture.

Anyway, the first grade party agenda for today: drive-in movie. Each child makes a car out of a cardboard box and parks it in the gym for the afternoon theater. Somebody was so excited she could hardly wait for the day. We had a great time on Saturday creating her "safari jeep," (I have no clue where she came up with that idea) after which she and Max went for many drives around the kitchen. She went all out creating the dashboard, license plate, and her drivers license. I wish I could be a fly on the wall

L is in love with the American Girl movie "Kit Kittredge." I have to admit, I love it too! (oh, to live in such simple times. minus the great depression.)

Her first questions, "What is that thing she is using? Why doesn't she use a computer?" Something about this typewriter business fascinated her and whatever it was, I liked it. I love that about my girl. She doesn't need something new, shiny, nor pink to make her giddy with excitement. So, a stop at the DI and $10 later, we have a good-old typewriter too! She has been practicing her typing non-stop since we bought it. I love the thought of her in her bedroom typing away stories and poems and whatever else her little brain can imagine. We talked about creating a summer newspaper (newsletter) to send to all of her cousins in N.C.. I think it sounds like so much fun.

I'm happy to report that I survived- quite well actually. Every surgery that I've had I've demanded to be given NO pain meds, only IBU. Every time, without fail, the Dr. comes in and tells me how recovery will be miserable and take longer due to the absence of pain medication. I am proud to say that once again, I was right. I have minor swelling around my jaw line, and I can definitely tell I had my teeth pulled, but come on, I don't need to be knocked out by narcotics- thank you very much.

Thank you Mr. W for taking such good care of me, as I drifted in and out of consciousness from the anesthesia. And your patience as I watched "The Holiday" at 2 am because I slept too much yesterday. I am happy that you continued the tradition of stocking up on treats after my surgery. Somehow it comforts me to know that you can't go to work and all you can do is hang out at home and eat Sara Lee apple pie. Myself on the other hand, tomato soup is the entree of choice and dessert is my key lime pie filling with graham cracker crumbs sprinkled on top. yum.

The time has arrived. It was inevitable. Tomorrow I am FINALLY having my wisdom teeth extracted. I have put it off, and put it off, and put it off, until there are no excuses left. So, at 31 years of age... here we go. Just another surgery to check off the list. I think this is #5. Yuck.

I have to apologize to L's cousins, who have waited so patiently for their birthday gifts. I am shipping them in the morning. Sorry Auntie Denise, who was so kind to drive 2 hours each way with 4 children in tow to support our girl. We love you guys.

On another note, mom and dad left us yesterday to return home. We had a wonderful time having them here for 2 weeks. After the tears we got into the car at the airport, where there was an obvious absence of their presence. I am so glad we were able to visit Moab together. We are left with a little void in our hearts, but beautiful memories to get us through to the next visit.

Megan are you home yet? I made this dress from the pattern you bought at the DI. (with a few adjustments of course) I love it! I thought I'd better add the cap sleeve. L is so aware of modesty...let's hope that continues! Next time I think I'll add buttons instead of a zipper. There is something so sweet and old- fashioned about buttons. Last night we were sitting at the dinner table and noticed this incredible rainbow outside. WOW! This is probably the fourth rainbow we have seen this spring. What a beautiful miracle.

L and I will be taking off in a few hours to pick up my parents and David at the airport. I love the anticipation of seeing them come down the escalator, and being on the receiving end of their hugs. It is always so comforting to have them close by me.

Last night L kept saying, "it doesn't feel like it's my birthday tomorrow." Maybe that is because your mother planned your birthday party with your friends 6 days before your actual birthday...sorry sweetie.

But with the sunrise and a new day, I think it HAS felt like her birthday! Lots of hugs and kisses as mom and dad reflect on what a sacred day this is, and always will be. I even skipped my morning date with my treadmill and elliptical to celebrate before she was off to school. No cake today, (still recovering from the last one and anticipating another on Saturday) instead by request from the birthday girl crepes, fresh cream, and strawberries.

My little girl....you are beautiful, wonderful, intelligent, kind, charitable, and virtuous. Don't ever forget it!

I guess that birthday bash inspired some deep cleaning and re-organizing. While in the midst of tackling the aftermath, I yelled downstairs to Mr. W "I need to go to Ikea to get some bookshelves some time!" He surprised me with his immediate response, "let's go...now." I was surprised since Ikea is an hour and a half away, and he makes that drive 5 days a week. Needless to say, we hopped in the car and off we went. We got a great bookshelf and the hanging storage containers for miss L's never-ending collection of art supplies. Love it!

If you know L at all, you know that she loves Chinese culture. Mr. W's classmate is so sweet to periodically send little gestures of kindness home with him for our girl. Last night it was this beautiful umbrella! L loves it so much! Thank you Cynthia, we appreciate your kindness.

Wow, what a party! 16 little friends, presents, games, and lots of sugar made for one exciting evening! After 6 hours of cleaning today, things are back to normal around here.

Sometimes, okay much of the time, I feel so guilty that I get to be the "stay at home mom," and my sweet husband works so hard and goes to school. Today I wanted to say thank you in a way that he would appreciate and not expect. Nothing says "I love you" to Mr. W like homemade apple pie! I love preparing food that takes time and patience to create. I love the smell as it bakes, the anticipation of Mr. W's face, and I love the smiles around the dinner table!

It was beautiful, wonderful, and dare I say "perfect!" We spent the last week learning together about the life of our Savior. We took time as a family to reflect on the events that occurred on the days leading up to Easter morning. That was beautiful. Most beautiful certainly is the miracle of Easter morning, an empty tomb, our resurrected Savior. I am thankful for such a holiday.

Amazingly, it was warm enough for L to wear her new outfit to church! The Easter bunny was generous this year, even kind enough to leave a moopy doll. (thank you for the idea Laura)

We did it! L and I dyed Easter eggs using red cabbage, red onion skins, and beets! (oh the smell...I'm sure you can imagine) It was so much fun and the colors were so unexpected.

First we cut up veggies and boiled them for 30 minutes. (I used just enough water to cover the vegetables) Strain and add vinegar. (I guessed, maybe 1 Tablespoon to 1 cup of dye)

This was the result of red cabbage dye. The 2 on the left were boiled in the cabbage, the 2 on the right soaked in the dye for an hour or so.

These are the products of beets! The one on the left was a brown egg to begin with. The yellow was boiled with the beets before vinegar was added (wow, that was a surprise) and the last three were soaked in the dye for 15 minutes.

This beauty was dyed in the red onion leaves. I love the earthy color.

L was in science heaven, I was in L heaven, and now we have a beautiful centerpiece for Easter!

Conference weekends are my favorite weekends of the year! It was so wonderful, inspiring, and rejuvenating. (and let's not forget the doughnut making) Oh how I love to hear Elder Holland speak, and how beautiful was his testimony considering the Easter weekend approaching. We had a wonderful family home evening last night (I found on lds.org) that included a little program with beautiful music. In no way do I have a singing voice, but the spirit was so strong as we read about the life of our Savior and sang the beautiful hymns together. The three of us around the piano, reading and singing together is something I will never forget.

I bought L some converse shoes, which forced her to learn to tie her shoes this weekend. I guess the beauty of waiting so long to buy her shoes that tie is that I showed her twice how to do it and - done!

cabin fever

L has been sick the past 2 days...I am feeling a little stuck. (a.k.a. cabin fever) Thank goodness I had some materials on hand, just waiting to be used.

I finally tried the freezer paper idea - loving it! It is so fun and easy. Here is a very helpful tutorial I found. Love the bird, since this is as close to owning anything Eames I am going to have for a while. L does not like to wear long sleeves, so we cut them off and made them into short sleeves. Which I guess works out nice, since they most likely will not fit next fall.

I laid in bed last night after our nightly prayers, scriptures, and stories and was beautifully serenaded by Mr. W practicing the piano. It was heavenly. People always say they wish they would have stuck with piano lessons and learned to play the piano. I however, have no regrets about quitting. (yes, I am a piano lesson drop out, and if he weren't so good I may feel differently) It is much better to enjoy the piano by listening to the one you love and feeling the emotion and passion of the melody that flows from their fingertips. Love.
